Promoting your website can take up a lot of your valuable time, and involve many, many different types of advertising. You may send half and hour promoting through forums, then jump to submitting through link directories and spend a bit of time through blogs…you get what I mean here.
You may also have different reasons for promoting. The reasons can often include:
> Promoting to gain members/sales
> Promoting to gain traffic
> Promoting to improve search engine rankings
> Promoting to improve pagerank
> Promoting to increase awareness.Now you must consider before promoting the reasons behind your time, and if the methods of promotion you are using are worthwhile. What I mean by this is that are you promoting in the best areas to gain what you want? I will look at the reasons I suggested above, and give my thoughts on the best places to promote if when targeting these.
> Promoting to gain members/sales
When promoting to gain members or sales, you are looking to target often specific audiences. You also best gain members/sales through people who trust you and people who are interested in the subject/genre.Best Methods: Forums
> Promoting to gain traffic
When promoting to gain traffic, you will often not aim to get as many members/sales, but more just unique hits on your web page. You may use this method when selling a website, or to increase activity.Best Methods: Traffic/Affiliate Exchange Programs, Social Networks
> Promoting to improve search engine rankings
When looking to improve search engine rankings, a number of things are considered. Search engines are looking for Backlink Variation along with quality backlinks. A mix of NoFollow and DoFollow backlinks can help along with relevant backlinks.Best Methods: Article Directories, Link Directories, Forums
> Promoting to improve pagerank
When looking to improve your google pageranking, you are looking to increase your backlink numbers and quantity of high pageranking backlinks.Best Methods: Link Directories, Link Exchanges, Blog Commenting
> Promoting to increase awareness.
To increase awareness, you want lots of people to see the new/link of your site. This requires active traffic or an active community.Best Methods: Social Networks, Forums
This is by no means a hard and fast rule, but just a few pointers to guide you along. As you can see many of the different categories overlap and certain promotions can help increase many different areas.
